Description Architecture Guide

Anatomy of a High-Converting YouTube Description

A YouTube video description serves two critical masters: search engine indexing crawlers and human viewers deciding whether to watch, subscribe, or buy. Formatting your description with clear semantic hierarchy unlocks maximum discoverability.

01

Above-The-Fold Hook

The first 100 to 150 characters are visible on mobile search results and YouTube watch pages without clicking “Show More”. Always include your main topic and viewer benefit in this initial sentence.

02

00:00 Key Moments

To trigger Google Search Key Moments, your timestamps MUST start with 00:00, contain at least 3 chapters in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.

03

FTC Endorsement Rules

If your description includes affiliate links (Amazon Associates, software referrals) or paid sponsorships, the Federal Trade Commission requires clear and conspicuous disclosure before the links appear.

Frequently Asked Questions about YouTube Descriptions

How many characters does YouTube allow in a video description?

YouTube allows up to 5,000 characters per description. An optimal description for search-targeted videos is between 800 and 1,500 characters, providing ample semantic context without triggering keyword-stuffing penalties.

Why didn’t my chapters show up on my YouTube video?

The three most common reasons chapters fail to appear are: (1) The first chapter does not begin at exactly 00:00, (2) The video has fewer than 3 timestamps, or (3) A chapter duration is shorter than 10 seconds. Check that your account does not have active copyright or community strikes.

Assemble a searchable description with a clear opening hook, chapter timestamps, links, a call to action and the disclosures YouTube expects.

The structure of a searchable description

A description does two jobs at once. Above the fold it has to persuade a viewer who tapped "show more" that the video is worth their time. Below it, it has to give the matcher clear topical signals and any navigation the viewer needs.

The generator builds the description in that order: hook, keyword-bearing opening, chapters, key points, links, call to action, then the chapters list YouTube needs to create Key Moments.

Why the first 150 characters carry the most weight

Only roughly the first 150 characters appear before "show more", on both mobile and desktop. That is the only part of the description most viewers will ever read, so the primary keyword and the clearest statement of what the video covers belong there.

Anything vital you bury below the fold is effectively only visible to search engines and the minority of viewers who expand the text.

Chapters, Key Moments and honest disclosure

Chapters help viewers navigate and give Google Key Moments something to index. They only register when the first stamp is 00:00, the timestamps are at least ten seconds apart, and there are at least three of them in ascending order.

If your video contains a paid promotion or an affiliate link, the disclosure belongs in the description as well as on screen. Both the FTC and YouTube require it to be clear, and the tool adds a placeholder you can fill in.

Questions about this tool

Do timestamps and chapters really matter?

Yes, for two reasons. Chapters let viewers jump to the part they need, and correctly formatted timestamps let Google surface Key Moments in search results. Chapters that do not follow YouTube's rules simply will not appear.

How long should a YouTube description be?

Long enough to cover the hook, the key points and the links, and no longer. The 5,000-character ceiling is a limit, not a target. A padded description does not rank better and is harder for a viewer to use.

Do I need a disclosure if a link is an affiliate link?

Yes. An affiliate link is a material connection, and both the FTC and YouTube require you to disclose it clearly and near the link. The generator inserts an editable disclosure block so you do not forget it.
